Málstofa á vegum Hagfræðideildar: Institutions and protected area 
management: Towards improved understanding of some of the challenges in 
the conservation landscapes in East Africa.

The lecture is based on JGP Phd thesis that he defended from the Norwegian 
University of Life Sciences earlier this year in Environmental and 
Development studies. The lecture focuses on analysis of some important 
institutional challenges related to protected area (PA) management, with a 
special focus on the role of local communities. It uses Mt. Elgon in 
Uganda and Kenya as a case for analysing some of the key PA challenges in 
East Africa, where JGP conducted fieldwork for the thesis. The work is 
rooted in contemporary classical institutional theory used to generate 
subsequent theoretical frameworks and methodological tools for the 
individual studies presented. The work presented is based on four 
individual but interrelated studies that address distinct aspects of the 
PA institutional challenges.

The lecture will be presented in English.
