FLIGHT OF THE RAVEN:

Oral Literature of the Haida of British Columbia

A Talk by Robert Bringhurst

National Museum seminar room, Reykjavik

1030-1130 Friday 11 September

Introduced and moderated by Dr Terry Gunnell, Department of
Folkloristics, University of Iceland

Robert Bringhurst, one of Canada’s best known poets, is visiting
Iceland for the 2009 Reykjavik Book Fair. He has published more than
fifteen books and also seminal works on art and typography, and he has
recently written and lectured on the nature of language itself. His
groundbreaking study of a Native American oral literature, A Story as
Sharp as a Knife: The Classical Haida Mythtellers and Their World
(1999), unleashed a storm of controversy and a tidal wave of praise
and was followed by two volumes of translation of Haida oral poetry.
Born in Los Angeles, Bringhurst was educated at Indiana University and
the University of British Columbia and has been author-in-residence at
several universities including Edinburgh, UK.
This lecture is sponsored by the English Speaking Union of Iceland
with the kind assistance of the Embassy of Canada.

Admission is free and all are welcome
