About the positions:
Profile 1:
For this position, PhD fellow applicants can choose a topic related to one of the department's three research groups:
- Information and society (INFOSAM): The group studies professions in the field of information science, such as archiving and librarianship, and their roles in society, and information use in general in both work life and leisure time. The group currently has a large research project funded by the Norwegian Research Council about libraries, archives and museums as public sphere institutions.
- Mediation of Culture and Literature (LITKULT): The group looks at how texts and other cultural expressions are constructed, gathered, and disseminated, and how they contribute towards individual and social development and understanding.
- Information systems based on metadata (METAINFO): The group investigates how to improve people's access to digital information.
The department is a member of the international iSchools network, which means that the study programs and research should focus on the relationship between people, information and technology. It is a prerequisite that the PhD project should do the same.

Profile 3
In line with global, technological and material trends, fiction and non-fiction landscapes are changing radically in regard to the production and publishing, as well as the distribution and dissemination of texts. As a result, genres and reading patterns are changing, which in turn changes how and in what ways literature is discussed. Increasingly, literary discussions are taking place in digital public spheres. These developments have led to a great need for research-based knowledge in these areas. For the advertised position, projects focusing on the implications that these changes have for libraries are particularly relevant.
The PhD research position is linked to the subject of sociology of literature and the research group Mediation of Culture and Literature (LITKULT). Applicants must prepare a PhD project proposal. Relevant topics could be:
- reading and media habits in Norway, such as children's use of digital literature or contemporary social reading and dissemination practices.
- changes in media materiality, availability and use, including consequences for libraries.
- the relationship between digital and traditional mediation services for literature.
