Dear colleagues,
It is our great pleasure to invite you to the "10th International Workshop
on Pathogenesis and Host Response in Helicobacter Infections" at Konventum
(LO-skolen) in Helsingør north of Copenhagen, July 4-7, 2012. The Workshop
is organised by the European Study Group on Pathogenesis and Immunology in
Helicobacter Infections (ESGPIHI), which is affiliated to the European
Helicobacter Study Group (EHSG). EHSG was founded in Copenhagen in 1987 and
has arranged the annual "EHSG Workshop” in different European countries
since 1988. The next annual workshop will be in Ljubljana, Slovenia,
September 13-15, 2012.
The award of the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2005 jointly to Barry Marshall
and Robin Warren for their discovery of the bacterium H. pylori and its role
in gastritis and peptic ulcer disease emphasizes an increasing focus on
Helicobacter. ESGPIHI was founded in Copenhagen in 1992 as the European
Pathogenesis and Immunology Study Group by scientists working on
Helicobacter infections with the main purpose of stimulating the
collaboration between scientific groups. One approach to realize this goal
is to arrange basic science meetings on pathogenesis and immunology.
Pathophysiology, diagnosis, antimicrobial agents and susceptibility testing
are not the main subjects of the meetings although basic mechanisms in these
fields are borderlines to the workshop.
The first open meeting of the group was in Helsingør, Denmark in 1994
followed by Galway, Ireland 1997 and Helsingør 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006,
2008 and 2010. The 2012 Helicobacter workshop in Helsingør will also deal
with:
- Motility, adhesion and colonization of Helicobacter species
- Molecular mechanisms and inflammation
- Molecular genetics and virulence factors
- Cellular and humural immune response and vaccines
- Interactions between host cells and Helicobacter spp.
- Carcinogenesis in Helicobacter infections
- New Helicobacter species and extragastric Helicobacter infections
- Experimental animal models
- Basic mechanisms of helicobacters and probiotics
- Metabolisms and treatment targets in Helicobacter infections
These disciplines are essential for understanding the development of chronic
gastritis, peptic ulcer, gastric cancer and MALT lymphoma, as well as the
extragastric manifestations of Helicobacter infections in humans and in
experimental animal models. Over the years, the workshops have developed
into international meetings with interaction between invited specialists
presenting keynote lectures, with emphasis on young scientists presenting
original work.
The 2012 Helicobacter workshop in Elsinore will honor the late Professor
Tony Moran, who unexpectedly passed away in 2010. He made invaluable
contributions to the previous workshops, and was the spokesman for sharing
ideas and encouraging the participation of young scientists, and organised
and co-organised the workshops over the years. The absence of his pleasant
personality and his scientific and highly inspiring discussions will be
strongly felt. To commemorate Tony and his great achievements, the first day
of the workshop in Helsingør will be devoted to him.
We look forward to seeing you in Helsingør in July 2012.
