(Erindið tengist rannsóknum á orsök smitandi hósta í hrossum.)

Streptococcus equi subspecies zooepidemicus (S. zooepidemicus) is the
most frequently isolated pathogen of horses: associated with inflammatory
airway disease in Thoroughbred racehorses, uterine infections in mares and
ulcerative keratitis. It is also associated with disease in a wide range of
other animal hosts including dogs, cattle, sheep, pigs, monkeys and humans.
A biovar of S. zooepidemicus, Streptococcus equi subspecies equi (S. equi),
is the causative agent of equine strangles, one of the most frequently
diagnosed and important infectious diseases of horses worldwide.

We have used a multilocus sequence typing (MLST) scheme and genome
sequencing to identify different strains of S. zooepidemicus towards
developing an understanding of the genetic basis for the selection of host
and site of infection.

This presentation will describe our current understanding of the S.
zooepidemicus population and relate this to the 2010 Icelandic outbreak of
equine respiratory disease, which affected over 78,000 horses. The use of
new sequencing technologies permits fine mapping of disease outbreaks at the
genetic level that can provide new insights into the transmission and
virulence of this misunderstood bacterium.
