Call for Papers Versification: Metrics in Practice 25th–27th May 2016,Helsinki, Finland Versificationdescribes the marriage of language and meter: it is the key to the productionof poetry.  This phenomenon attractsresearchers from a wide variety of intersecting disciplines, ranging from metricistsproper and researchers of cognitive poetics to scholars of folklore, linguistics, linguistic anthropology, literature, musicology, philology and more.  Meter is often discussed abstractly as theformalization of how words, sounds and sometimes also semantics relate torhythm, yet poetic meter cannot exist without instantiation through languageand a connection with social language practice. The 2016 NordMetrik conference brings focused attention precisely here,on versification as metrics in practice.   By bringingtogether the insights and perspectives from different disciplines on the manyfacets of versification, our aim is to stimulate multidisciplinary discussion inorder to negotiate shared understanding leading to new knowledge.  No natural language in human history has beenwithout poetry.  This fact suggests thatversification is somehow fundamental to culture, and underscores the importanceof subjecting this phenomenon to concentrated discussion.  Keynotespeakers:–       PaulKiparsky (Stanford University) –       TomasRiad (University of Stockholm)–       JesperSvenbro (Swedish Academy) –       KatiKallio (Finnish Literature Society (SKS))–       JarkkoNiemi (University of Tampere) Weinvite proposals for papers on the following and related topics:–       Thesymbiosis of meter and language in practice–       Therelationship between meter, melody and rhythm–       Teaching/communicatingand learning/internalizing meter and versification systems–       Competence, communication and practice–       Generativemetrics –       Cognitivepoetics –       Thelanguage- and/or culture-boundedness of poetry practice–       Performanceand the study of versification–       Impactsof social or cultural change on metrics and versification–       Theinvention and variation of meters in literary poetics Papersmay either concentrate on empirical studies of specific poetries or have a theoreticalor methodological emphasis.  Each speakerwill be allowed 20 minutes for presentation followed by 10 minutes fordiscussion.   We ask speakers to keep in mind that theaudience will be multidisciplinary, and presentations should remain accessibleto specialists in other fields. Topropose a paper, please send a title, 3-5 keywords and a 300-word abstractalong with your name, affiliation and contact information to Eeva-Liisa Bastmanat eeva-liisa.bastman[at]helsinki.fi . The deadline for proposals is 1st October 2015.   Formore information please visit our website at http://blogs.helsinki.fi/versification/ Versification:Metrics in Practice isorganized by the Department of Folklore Studies and the Department of FinnishLiterature, University of Helsinki, in cooperation with the Finnish LiteratureSociety (SKS).
