20 – 23 August 2014 in Akureyri, Iceland

Abstract submission deadline: April 1, 2014

Conference registration deadline: June 30, 2014

Website: www.tradition.is

Meet other researchers and scholars of Nordic traditional music and dance in Akureyri, Iceland 20 – 23 August 2014. This conference is held by the Nordic Folk Music Committee in cooperation with University of Akureyri Research Centre, University of Iceland Music Research Centre, Stemma – the Icelandic Traditional Folk Music Association and many other organizations, associations and companies.

The conference will showcase broad themes aimed at increasing knowledge and understanding of Nordic cultural heritage of music, dance and related fields, such as prosody in Icelandic poetry. The UNESCO convention regarding the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage is a central concept of the conference. Deepening our awareness of the inescapably ever changing landscape of artistic expression on one hand and realizing the crucial role of systematic safeguarding on the other, while seeking a balance between these two seemingly opposites, is vital for the survival of tradition.

We encourage you to submit one proposal(s) of max. 250 words describing the content of your intended contribution. Proposals must be submitted on our Abstract Submittal Form at the conference website www.tradition.is. Estimated presentation time is 20 minutes and 10 minutes for questions. Abstracts and lectures must be in English. The deadline for submitting abstracts is April 1st 2014. You will receive an answer by email no later then May 1st 2014.

Conference Themes:

1. The Unique and Interrelated Heritage of Nordic Music and Dance: Provide the opportunity for the people of Nordic nations to learn about their traditional heritage of music and dance and seek a common Nordic heritage. Each Nordic country has many varieties of traditional music and dance within its borders. Some types will likely have much in common with traditions in the other Nordic countries, some less, and some are inevitably unique. In order to reveal a common thread, each country’s unique traditions need to be presented and explored.

2. Tradition >< Evolution – the Nordic in the World – the World within the Nordic: No artistic manifestation is static – its inherent characteristic is to evolve due to internal as well as external influences. The 20th century has seen faster changes than the previous centuries, in part due to easy access to endless varieties of music and dance {the Nordic in the world} and in part due to immigrants whose traditions derive from a place far away to the east, south or west {the world within the Nordic}. This change in the landscape of traditional music and dance in the Nordic merits examination and dialogue.

3. Safeguarding Heritage: Preserve >< Protect – Archived tradition >< Living tradition: The safeguarding of intangible heritage in the Nordic countries, ideas regarding cooperation and coordination and the search for "best practice" is a fundamental theme of the conference. The UNESCO convention for the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage has been signed by Denmark, Iceland, Finland, Norway and Sweden. This convention is an important tool for the safeguarding of musical and dance traditions. It provides guidelines for transmission and protection of living traditions and emphasizes the importance of cooperation between the practitioners, researchers and officials.
