LABORLORE: THE CULTURAL TRADITIONS OF ICELANDIC WORKERS
A presentation of images, sounds, and commentary by graduate students in Jim
Leary's course, Public Folklore: American Perspectives, Icelandic
Possibilities
Wednesday 28 November, 19:30-21:30
Hannesarholt, Grundarstíg 10
Laborlore--the tricks of the trade, sayings, stories, beliefs, and customs
of workers--flourishes in rural and urban Iceland, among native born and
newcomers, and has much to tell us about the experiences and identity
Icelandic workers, past and present. This multi-media presentation draws on
current digital field documentation, and will include a discussion that
involves some of the workers portrayed. For a preview see the project
website-in-progress: http://knitbird.com/folklore/
Jim Leary is professor of Folklore and Scandinavian Studies at the
University of Wisconsin, and in fall 2012 is a visiting Fulbright professor
of Folkloristics and Ethnology at the University of Iceland. The graduate
students include: Aline End, Anna Björg Ingadóttir, Anna Kjær Voss, Arndís
Hulda Auðunsdóttir, Guðrún Emilía Kolbeinsdóttir, Gunný Ísis Magnúsdóttir,
Samuel Ludger Levesque, Sæbjörg Freyja Gísladóttir, and Trausti Dagsson.
