A Game of Two Halves

Dr. Neill Martin þjóðfræðikennari við Edinborgarháskóla flytur fyrirlestur á
vegum Félags þjóðfræðinga á Íslandi og Háskóla Íslands. Hann mun fjalla um
árstíðabundnar keppnir frá Skotlandi, Englandi og ... Japan. Fyrirlesturinn
kallar hann "A Game of Two Halves; Winning and Losing in Seasonal Contest".

Fyrirlesturinn fer fram í stofu 103 á Háskólatorgi kl: 16, fimmtudaginn 26.
ágúst.

Aðgangur er ókeypis og öllum heimill.

Nánar:
In Scotland and elsewhere, key points in the calendar, such as New Year and
the beginning of Lent, are often marked by a contest between two opposed
entities. An example would be a contest between one side idenitifed with
summer versus one representing winter. The outcome of this contest would be
"fixed" - after all, we can hardly have winter winning a contest which is
intended to mark the beginning of the light half of the year.

However, many contests appear to have no winners or losers, and the two
opposed entities are in fact two halves of the same community.

The lecture explores the nature and significance of seasonal contest and
will draw upon examples from Scotland, England... and Japan.
