Dear all,

This week we have:

Andri Stefánsson (Faculty of Earth Sciences, University of Iceland)

Title: The Iceland Hotspot - Mantle Heterogeneity and Transport of Volatiles from the Mantle to Surface

Abstract: The Iceland hotspot and the chemical and geological properties of the mantle and crust can be studied by volatile chemical and isotope characteristics of fluids and melts. The combination of large datasets of solid and fluids together with geochemical and isotope simulations can be used to look at small and large scale processes from the mantle and within the crust. Isotope data and modeling revile mantle heterogeneity of the Icelandic hotspot. These signatures are evidenced in basaltic glasses, melt, inclusions, thermal fluids and groundwater systems. Here the deep signatures in thermal fluids and groundwater systems will be introduced. Mapping of crustal degassing revile local deep mantle sources placed on- and off-rift of the Icelandic crust, rather than a single located plume source whereas other locations are dominated by shallow crustal volatile sources and reactions between the crystalline rocks and the waters.

Date: Friday, 10th November
Time: 12:30
Place: 3rd Floor meeting room, Askja

All are welcome.

Best wishes
Maxwell
