Dear graduate students,

This Friday is the first seminar of the new academic year.  We start with:

Sigurjón Jónsson (professor of geophysics, KAUST - King Abdullah
University of Science and Technology)

Title: One or two magma chambers under Galápagos calderas?

Abstract: Several recent studies focusing on Galápagos volcanoes have
reported co-eruption deflation consisting of focused intra-caldera
subsidence superimposed on wider and weaker deflation signals. These
coupled subsidence patterns have been modeled using pressure decrease in
two magma reservoirs located at different depths. Here we explore
whether these observations can be explained with a different type of
models consisting of a single reservoir interacting with the caldera
ring fault. We first report on the recent 2015 Wolf eruption in the
Galápagos that shows some of the same characteristics seen earlier at
other Galápagos volcanoes. We then use both analogue sandbox experiments
and numerical modeling to study processes involved from initial
subsidence to later collapse of calderas, compare the results to the
observations, and discuss which class of models more likely represents
the structure under the volcanoes.

Date: Friday, 25th August
Time: 12:30
Place: 3rd Floor meeting room, Askja

All are welcome.
Best wishes
Maxwell
