Hello everybody

Next Friday, November 11th, Sune Tamm Polar law candidate at the University
of Akureyri will visit us from 9:15-10:15. Sune has also been Science
Planner for the United States Antarctic Program, Field Camp Manager on Mt.
Erebus and Polar Field Guide for the British Antarctic Survey. Sune will
give a 30-40 min talk about his experience on Antarctica as well as
describing possible research opportunities opening to the Icelandic
research community, by Iceland becoming part of the Antarctic Treaty. The
talk will be followed by discussion with Sune. The meeting will be in the
meeting room, 3rd floor in Askja.

Best regards,

able to field questions about work on the volcano. Any collaboration would
be formalized through the Antarctic Sciences Section Head: Eric Saltzman
esaltzma at nsf.gov

Disciplines: Volcanology, Microbiology

Description: Small camp (max 15) located at ±3000 metres on Mt.
Erebus on Ross Island, Antarctica. There are numerous fumeroles, ice
caves, geothermal features where studies have been conducted since the
1960s.

Costs: by MOU with NSF Antarctic Sciences Section Head

Other: Final Report of MEVO meeting (appended)

A long term study is concluding on Mt. Erebus in Jan 2017 and NSF is
actively seeking ways to optimize research opportunities at MEVO

Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition (JARE)

Agency: National Institute of Polar Research (NIPR), Japan

Contact: Kentaro Watanabe

Job Title: Head of International Affairs

Disciplines: Oceanography / Aurora and atmospherics (JARE uses data
from aurora stations in Iceland and Antarctica)

Description: Japan accepts international researchers on its vessel
and possibly also stations

Costs: All costs of deployment covered by JARE. Costs of transport to
port of embarkation (Perth) and transport of equipment to port covered by
guest scientist institution

Ocean Expeditions

Agency: Independent Yacht (permitting through Australian
Antarctic Division)
