Dear all,
This is a quick reminder that the seminar series will continue today at
12:30 in the seminar room on the 3rd floor with a presentation given by:
*Bryndís Brandsdóttir* *‘The northern Kolbeinsey Ridge; ridge segmentation,
rifting and volcanism’*
Plate accretion at mid-ocean ridges is thought to be characterized by
cyclic bouts of magmatic extrusion and intrusion separated by periods when
tectonic activity accounts for plate separation. Using high-resolution
acoustic backscatter intensity as a proxy for sediment thickness provides a
viable tool to estimate relative age of ridge axis lavas in regions of high
glacial and post-glacial sedimentation rates.
I will present preliminary results from the POS502 research cruise to the
N-Kolbeinsey Ridge this summer. The main goal of the cruise was to map in
detail the morphological variations of seafloor lava flows and their effect
on hydro-acoustic properties using a high resolution photographs using a
DeepSurveyCam System mounted on the ROV. Individual lava flows were also
sampled in order to determine their age and for geochemical analyses.
Best,
Maren & Maria
