Dear Folda members,
Tom Claybourn is going to present to us an Independent Mapping of his bacelors project, next Thursday (8th of November).
During the summer of 2010, 5 weeks were spent mapping an area around the village of Petrich, Sofia Province, Bulgaria. The geology of the area can be divided into three elements: Precambrian basement (one formation), Triassic sediments (two formations), deposited at the northern edge of the Iapetus Ocean, and Cretaceous sediments and volcanics (6 formations), deposited in a back-arc basin, related to the subduction of the Vardar or Tethys Ocean slab. Lithological descriptions of nine formations are provided. A detailed description of the tectonic regime, is also provided, based mainly around the Cretaceous to recent tectonic forces applied to the area (that of the relation between the structure of the area and subsequent compressional and extensional forces). Structural readings are also analysed, and correlated to the movement of the African plate’s migration across the Tethys and subsequent collision into Eurasia.
Best regards,
Board of Folda
