Subject: [EAIE-L] Canadian and Native Studies Summer Program at the University of Alberta, Canada
We are pleased to announce an exciting new summer program which may prove of interest to your students.
The University of Alberta is offering a unique issue-oriented International Summer School Program (ISP) in Canadian and Native Studies, which incorporates classroom learning with a series of experiential learning activities and field trips. The six week ISP has tied together academic courses, encompassing historical and contemporary content, with real-world activities that are engaging and fun. This is a destination education experience packaged with student service in mind. Participants will challenge their understanding of Canadian society through a diversity of experiences and will discover what it means to be Canadian. The program will run from July 1 - August 13, 2005.
The ISP curriculum features courses taught in both of Canada's official languages. Students may choose from Canadian, Francophone or Native Studies courses in a variety of contexts. Academic offerings in the ISP are required programming in several of our undergraduate degrees, so Canadian students will be sharing in, and contributing to, the learning environment. Course descriptions, including perquisites and language proficiency requirements, can be viewed at http://www.international.ualberta.ca/students/study/prospective/isp/Academic/.
The ISP field trip itinerary will include a variety of organized activities ranging from free to a cost recovery basis. Possible excursions may include:
-spending a wilderness weekend in the Canadian Rocky Mountains
-meeting and engaging with native communities and their elders
-attending a pow wow
-experiencing a local rodeo
-attending a discussion with Alberta politicians
-exploring Edmonton's French community through cultural activities
-spending a day at Fort Edmonton Park exploring Edmonton's development from a fur trading post to a booming metropolitan centre
The approximate cost of the program in Canadian funds is $3966. This amount includes tuition fees for two, three credit hour courses; textbooks for two courses; shared, double occupancy accommodation; food; medical/health insurance; and the application fee. Field trip itinerary costs are not included in the price of the program but will be available shortly at http://www.international.ualberta.ca/students/study/prospective/isp/Costs/.
The application and document deadline is May 1, 2005. For a printable application form please visit http://www.international.ualberta.ca/students/study/prospective/isp/Apply/. Questions and inquiries can be directed to catherine.broomfield at ualberta.ca.
We look forward to meeting and learning with your students this summer!
