Doctoral Student in
Library and Information Science with a Specialisation in the Digital
Humanities

Ref PA 2019/400

At the Faculty of
Librarianship, Information, Education and IT, education and research is
conducted in Library and Information Science, Pedagogical Work as well
as Trade
and IT. Undergraduate and graduate programmes and training for
librarians,
preschool teachers, primary and subject teachers, system architects and
web
editors are offered.

Doctoral education is
offered in the field of library and information science and is working
to
establish doctoral education programmes in Pedagogical Work and Trade
and IT.

The Faculty specifically
contributes to collaboration between the university and the surrounding
community in the following areas: The Regional Development Centre, the
Centre
for Digitisation and the Centre for Cultural Policy Research.

We are now seeking a
doctoral student in library and information science with a
specialisation in
the digital humanities at the Swedish School of Library and Information
Science.

The Swedish School of
Library and Information Science has for a long time been active in the
digital
humanities. The school has established relationships and partners in the
field
both internationally and nationally, such as the network Digital
Humanities in
the Nordic Countries, Centre for Digital Humanities at the University of
Gothenburg, and HumLab at Umeå University. A data lab focusing on
digital
methods development has recently been launched

For more information,
please see the research group's website:

https://www.hb.se/en/Research/Research-Portal/Research-groups/knowledge-infrastructures/

Job description

The digital
humanities often take as their starting point structured collections of
digitised materials. These have long been enriched, analysed, evaluated
and
explored by library and information science. We would therefore like the
doctoral student’s thesis work to be directed towards one or more of the
following areas:

* recognition,
     mining, and analysis of text, images or patterns in large amounts
of data
* cultural
     heritage digitisation, digital scholarly editions
* exploring,
     preserving or adding value to digital collections
* text
     encoding
* metadata,
     access to (linked) open data
* developing
     and/or exploring digital methods and tools

Employment as a doctoral
student covers the equivalent of four years of full-time studies.
Normally,
doctoral studentship employment focusses 80% of the time on doctoral
studies
and thesis work. The remaining time is set aside for departmental
service
including teaching and administration, meaning a total period of
employment of
five years.

Qualifications

The position
requires a degree at advanced level (Master’s) in library and
information
science or adjacent fields.

Applicants should also have very good knowledge of English, both written
and
spoken.

It is considered a merit to
have knowledge of Swedish or another Scandinavian language as well as
previous experience of and/or participation in research studies,
particularly
in the form of published research articles.

The University of Borås
values the qualities that even gender and age distribution as well as
ethnic
and cultural diversity add to our organisation.
