Theories in Library and Information Science - Selected perspectives on libraries, literature and knowledge organization

Autumn 2019
Course structure: independent studies and two meetings in Oslo (21-25 October and 9-11 December 2019).
Course description: The content of this doctoral study course is based on selected fields of contemporary research in the library and information science (LIS). It is designed to Nordic and Baltic LIS doctoral students, but also suitable for doctoral students in LIS in any other part of the world or in related research areas. The emphasis is laid on a number of research themes, such as: Metaviews in LIS; Information and society; Mediation of literature and culture; Perspectives from reception theory and Sociology of literature; Knowledge & Document management; Scholarly communication; Information behaviour, practices and literacy; and Information retrieval & Interactive information retrieval. The course is focused on the active research fields, the lectures are delivered by internationally established Nordic researchers, and the required literature is inclined to reputable research published in English language. However, students may enrich the course with literature in other languages.
The practical schema of the course is planned to facilitate international students' course participation. The course is delivered at the Oslo Metropolitan University, Oslo, Norway, and it combines lectures and seminars on campus with independent studies of literature as well as with written submission and oral presentation. The course is given in English.
