Dear all,
this is a second call for papers for the NORSLIS Workshop "Structures
of Power: Information, Knowledge, and Property" in Uppsala, September
15-17, 2005. (and apologies for cross-posting)
We have what we hope will be an exciting workshop lined up! As a
preliminary program we can promise that Bernd Frohman will address
issues of information ethics in his lecture, entitled " Information
Ethics Without Subjects", Matthew Rimmer, who is a Senior Lecturer at
the Faculty of Law, Australian National University and a member of the
Australian Library Association's Copyright Committe will talk about
information as trade in "Robbery under Arms: Copyright Law and the
Australia-United States Free Trade Agreement," and Eva Hemmungs Wirtén
will focus on the structural changes that face libraries in an
increasingly challenging nexus of technology, globalization, and
ownership in "Tolls or Free Flows? Globalization and the Information
Superhighway." There will be a nice social programme as well, with a
guided tour in Uppsala on the agenda, as well as good food and
conversation!!
Please not that we have no possibility of reserving rooms at Hotel
Uppsala beyond the date given for paper proposals so please keep the
deadline of April 15th for your proposals!!! If you have any questions
please contact me by e-mail - and as a reminder, I have enclosed the
text of the first call below.
We look forward to seeing you in Uppsala in September!

NORSLIS WORKSHOP: “Structures of Power: Information, Knowledge, and
Property”
Dear all,
plans for the NORSLIS workshop "Structures of Power: Information,
Knowledge, and Property" in September are becoming more definitive. As
previously announced, it will take place at Uppsala University between
September 15-17, and a block of rooms are now reserved for the
participants at Hotel Uppsala
http://www.profilhotels.se/hotel/uppsala/index.php. A preliminary
program will follow in the next few weeks, but the workshop officially
begins late Thursday afternoon, September 15.
This is a first call for paper proposals for the workshop, a workshop
that will explore, in as wide a possible a way, the nexus between
information, knowledge, and property, taking as point of departure the
fact that information and knowledge have become valuable resources of
the knowledge-based society. What are the possible ramifications for
civil society and public institutions such as libraries in this
scenario, where both increased access and increased control struggle
for domination? The workshop should be of interest to all graduate
students whose work touch upon information access, dissemination, and
control within this larger social/economic/cultural context. However,
this in no way disqualifies contributions dealing with less
contemporary periods, since a historical perspective remains an
essential feature to consider. To ensure a lively and productive
discussion spanning the many various approaches within LIS we therefore
invite a broad spectrum of papers that can deal with, but are not
limited to: questions of information access and control, information
policy and ethics, that problematize theoretical and methodological
approaches to the study of the Information Society within LIS; that
consider aspects of information technology; that focus on the crucial
role of legal regimes such as copyrights or that deal with projects
like the Public Library of Science http://www.plos.org/. In light of
Uppsala’s ALM-specialization, we would especially like to encourage
contributions that consider these questions from the perspective of the
cultural heritage institutions Archives, Libraries, and Museums.
PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
1) The number of participants are LIMITED TO 14 graduate students.
This will make it possible to avoid parallell sessions, allowing all
participants to listen and comment on all papers. The selection of
papers will be made on the strength of the proposal and its relevance
to the workshop theme.
2) Deadline for proposals are APRIL 15 and proposals should be
submitted electronically to Eva Hemmungs Wirtén ehw at abm.uu.se.
Acceptance will be made as soon as possible thereafter.
3) We are also pleased to announce that we plan to publish a
selection of the papers as a volume within the Department’s new book
series.
This information is also available on the NORSLIS website, and I
encourage you to check it for updates at regular intervals. If you
would like any further information, please don't hesitate to contact me
directly at ehw at abm.uu.se
