<i>Parascaris</i> spp. are nematode parasites infecting foals worldwide. Most foals are treated with anthelmintics several times during their first year which have led to the development of drug resistance in
<i>Parascaris</i> spp. Resistance to ivermectin was first discovered in 2002 and now seems to be common across the world.</span><span style="color:black"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p style="line-height:115%"><span lang="EN-US" style="color:black">The level of resistance in
<i>Parascaris</i> spp. is not known in Iceland. Therefore we have performed a Faecal Egg Count Reduction Test on Icelandic horse farms to evaluate the efficacy of ivermectin. Results from 8 farms in North and West Iceland show a high level of resistance to
ivermectin. </span><span style="color:black"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p style="line-height:115%"><span lang="EN-US" style="color:black">More recently treatment failure to both pyrantel and fenbendazole have also been reported in Europe, North America and Australia. Despite this recent development the causes of anthelmintic resistance
are not known in <i>Parascaris</i> spp. To gain more knowledge about drug resistance in
<i>Parascaris</i> spp. we exposed adult worms to ivermectin, pyrantel or thiabendazole
<i>in vitro</i>. After exposure the transcriptomes of the worms were sequenced to see how the gene expression was affected. From this experiment we have identified a number of novel genes possibly involved in drug metabolism and drug resistance in these parasites.
