Dear Colleagues,

Antimicrobial resistance is a challenge for public health and the problem
of this century. Objective of the 2nd European Conference on Antimicrobial
Resistance and Infection Prevention is to call specialist and public attention
to this key problem of public health.

Annually about 440 thousand cases of multidrug-resistant mycobacterium-caused
tuberculosis are identified, and at least 150 thousand people die of it.
Number of drug-resistant tuberculosis cases is, unfortunately, on
increase also in Lithuania, and this indicator is one of the highest in
the world. Treatment of only drug-resistant tuberculosis cost for the Lithuanian
tax-payers from 6.6 up to 10.5 million Litas a year. In the last decade
prevalence of the sexually transmitted infections has inclined. We
face augmenting reproduction problems due to increasing prevalence of diseases
caused by C. Trachomatis. Public health is confronted with even more troubles
because of gonorrhoea prevalence and spread of drug-resistant N. Gonorrhoeae.
Resistance among human deficiency and hepatitis C viruses to new antiviral
medication is real and worrying. Current treatment of latent Hepatitis
B does not protect from viral replication.
Inadequately prescribed and used not only in human health care but
also in veterinary, agriculture and food producing animals stimulate the
spread of antibiotic-resistant micro organisms in humans, livestock and
environment. Resistance development is supported by antibiotic use
for animal growth stimulation, treatment and prevention of infectious diseases
since this is an opening for spread of resistant microbes from animal to
human via food of animal origin. Improper antibiotic use, especially of
carbapenems, third and fourth generation cephalosporins and fluorochinilons
can be associated with carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae infections
and colonisation risk, outbreaks of these infection frequent hospitals.
Problem of antimicrobial resistance is getting worse as very few
new antibiotics have been discovered for a quite long time, only new derivatives
of current classes are synthesize, which are , in fact, analogous to their
predecessors. Bacteria affected by antimicrobials in this way are able
to adapt to unfavourable conditions as majority of them have required genetic
information to develop resistance.

Bacterial resistance differs from country to country depending from various
factors (country economy, geographical location, legal basis, etc.) Development
of Lithuanian economy has also undoubtedly influenced antimicrobial resistance.
European survey data proved 47% belief of the Europeans in antibiotic
effectiveness against cold and fever. Even 71% of Lithuanians are certain
of this, while only 28% of Fins think the same way. We must look for effective
ways to prevent improper antibiotic use not only in health care but also
in other sectors: veterinary, agriculture, food production. New, research-based,
cheap, standardized, accessible methods for bacteria identification and
analysis of the mechanisms of their resistance are required. Urgent
measures to stop transmission of resistant micro organisms via food of
animal origin to be applied, radical changes of public attitudes toward
antibiotic use are indispensable. To increase public awareness of the problem,
to discuss actual issues of the worsening antimicrobial resistance and
communicable disease prevention, and to look for well-chosen decisions
we invite politicians, specialists of public and personal health, drug
producers and distributors and general population to attend the 2nd European
Conference on Antimicrobial Resistance and Infection Prevention to be held
in Vilnius on 4-5 October, 2012.

On behalf of the ARIC Organising Committee, we look forward to welcoming
you to Vilnius.

Yours sincerely,
