<br><font size=3 face="Arial">As Chair of the American College of Microbiology’s
Committee on Postgraduate Educational Programs (CPEP), I am pleased to
provide information concerning postdoctoral training opportunities. CPEP
accredits postdoctoral training programs in medical and public health microbiology
and in medical laboratory immunology. These 2-year programs are designed
to prepare aspiring microbiologists and immunologists for leadership positions
in medical and public health laboratories, research careers in commercial
or university laboratories, or faculty teaching positions in graduate or
undergraduate programs. There are 13 CPEP-accredited programs located in
the U.S. </font>

<br><font size=3 face="Arial">To apply for a position in a postdoctoral
training program, you must have a doctoral degree with graduate courses
in microbiology and/or immunology. For a list of CPEP programs, please

You can apply to most programs by completing and submitting the on-line
application. The individual programs make all decisions regarding admission
to the programs. Personal interviews are arranged by the programs; expenses
for these interviews are the responsibility of applicants. </font>

<br><font size=3 face="Arial">I encourage you to visit the CPEP website
and learn more about postdoctoral training in clinical microbiology and
immunology. Postdoctoral training in a CPEP-approved program is the best
first step toward professional certification by the American Board of Medical
Microbiology or the American Board of Medical Laboratory Immunology. Board
certification is required for most medical laboratory positions and provides
peer recognition. If you wish to contact a Board-certified medical microbiologist
or immunologist in your area, please contact me through the CPEP website.
This may be a helpful step toward understanding and selecting a postdoctoral
career path. </font>
