Heiti erindis:  A Molecular Odyssey: Exploring Host: Pathogen Interactions
from Bacteria to Fish to Crickets.

 

Erindið verður haldið fimmtudaginn 18. ágúst, kl. 12:20 í bókasafni
Tilraunastöðvarinnar. 

 

Molecular fingerprints have been used to compliment morphological data and
provide a detailed taxonomy of organisms from bacteria to invertebrates.
Molecular data has also allowed the identification of mobile genetic
elements and their role in antibiotic resistance of microbes. Physiological
changes due to environmental factors or stressors can lead to changes that
are identified at the molecular level using advanced biological and
proteomic techniques. Interactions between the infectious agent and the host
are at the protein level thus changes in protein complement can indicate an
alteration in the homeostatic state of the animal. There may also be changes
in protease activity in both the host and the pathogen.  Finally, gene
expression studies can identify changes in molecular signatures following
stress related events such as the fight-or-flight response. This talk will
encompass several aspects of molecular and proteomic research in a number of
different model systems.
