Fimmtudaginn 26. apríl 2007, verður haldinn fræðslufundur á vegum
Örverufræðifélags Íslands í Sjávarútvegshúsinu, Skúlagötu 4 kl 16:30.
Erindið flytur Bradd Haley og nefnist það "The Influence of Weather and
Season on Waterborne Pathogens in the Southeastern United States"

It has long been assumed that infections with enteric viruses and
pathogenic bacteria occur from the consumption of contaminated foods.
However, most epidemiological studies fail to find a food source for most
cases of gastroenteritis. Although contaminated foods most likely cause
most cases, it is coming to light that the environment may play a
significant role the transmission of these pathogens. Many of these
viruses and bacteria can be readily detected in environmental waters and
their presence and concentrations follow the same patterns as human
infections, suggesting a link. Retrospective studies have shown that most
illnesses caused by pathogens from the environment typically occur in the
warmer months of summer and are preceded by rainfall. Rainfall may
introduce pathogens into the aquatic environment through runoff and
wastewater treatment failures and overflows. The two studies presented
here illustrate the influence of weather and season on common human
pathogens in the aquatic environment.

Með kveðju,
