> Vad kommunicerar egentligen folkmusik i dag? Vilka kanaler och sammanhang står till buds för att tillägna sig det ”traditionella” i vår urbana och globala tid – och hur framställs det ”ursprungliga” i dagens musikutövande? Läs om det i nummer fyra i Svenskt visarkivs musik- och dansetnologiska tidskrift Puls.

> Temat för det fjärde numret av Puls är att praktisera det traditionella i nutiden vilket får sin belysning ur olika perspektiv och utifrån skilda material. En artikel analyserar de föreställningar om tid och plats som folkmusik bär med sig, i en annan studeras låtkurser som arena för icke-formellt lärande. En text sätter fokus på några av den tidiga arbetarrörelsens visor som muntlig tradition och medialiserad musik. I två artiklar ges exempel på hur lokala sångtraditioner i en portugisisk by respektive Kodaguområdet i sydvästra Indien får delvis nya betydelser i senmoderniteten. Är ”tradition” en uppsättning praktiker eller kanske en strategi för att legitimera sin musik?

> Som vanligt innehåller tidskriften också recensioner av aktuell litteratur på det musik- och dansetnologiska området, anmälningar och konferensrapporter. Nytt för detta nummer är publicering av abstracts av aktuella avhandlingar inom tidskriftens ämnesområden.

> What does folk music communicate in our contemporary society? How can we understand the complex relation between contemporary folk musical practice and the historical and cultural contexts that the music emanates from? The 4th issue of Puls, the Journal for Ethnomusicology and Ethnochoreology, is dedicated to these questions. The journal is published by the Centre for Swedish Folk Music and Jazz Research.

> The central theme of the 4th issue of Puls is how “the traditional” is put into practice in a contemporary setting, which the contributors elucidate from different perspectives and explicate with various empirical materials. One article analyses the imaginations of time and space that folk music carries with it, another article analyses folk music classes as an arena for non-formal learning. One text focuses on songs from the early workers’ movement as an oral tradition and as mediatised music. Two articles provide instances in which local singing traditions from a Portuguese village and the Kodagu area in southwestern India respectively, get partially new meanings in late modernity. Is “tradition” a set of practices or maybe a strategy to legitimise music?
