> Dear colleague,
>
> To mark SIEF's fiftieth birthday, you are hereby invited to take part in a special Jubilee Symposium and an Extraordinary General Assembly in Amsterdam. The event celebrates half a century of collaboration, dialogue, and critical debate in ethnology and folklore. The assembly and the symposium will take place in the afternoon of September 12, from 13-18 in the Special Collections (Bijzondere Collecties) of the University of Amsterdam, (address: Oude Turfmarkt 129, next to the Allard Pierson Museum).
>
> The illustrious line-up of speakers for the Jubilee Symposium includes two of SIEF's ex-presidents (Regina Bendix and Konrad Köstlin), SIEF's official historian Bjarne Rogan) and two special invited guests (Jasna Čapo and Orvar Löfgren). They have all been asked to speak "out of the box", and will move from a reflection on anniversaries and the history of the discipline to new perspectives on everyday life and meditations on the future of the field. The full program for the symposium is enclosed.
>
> The Extraordinary General Assembly begins at 13:00 and is scheduled to last for half an hour, after which the symposium begins. Looking forward to the next fifty years in the life of our society, the board will propose to move SIEF into an age of digital democracy, in which future general assemblies need not be limited to physical meetings of whatever part of the membership happens to be present at a particular congress but can also take place between congresses by means of online voting, where all SIEF members have the opportunity to take part. You will find the text of the proposal enclosed, along with the full agenda for the Extraordinary General Assembly.
>
> On behalf of the board and the society I hereby extend an invitation to all SIEF members to join us in Amsterdam in September. There is no fee for participation and everyone is most welcome. However, due to other congresses taking place in Amsterdam that week, the availability of hotel rooms is limited and so early booking is advisable. In addition to conventional hotels and B&Bs, congress participants might also wish to check availability on www.airbnb.com and comparable websites.
>
> To assist with preparations, we ask everyone who plans to participate in the General Assembly and/or the Symposium to please register by e-mail to sief at meertens.knaw.nl
