> The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) and the Asian School of the Environment (ASE) invite applications for a Research Fellow in Petrology and Tephrostratigraphy to participate in the reconstruction of the eruptive history of Sumatra (Indonesia) with a particular emphasis on large explosive (caldera-forming) eruptions. This will involve field work for site selection and collection of sediment cores from lakes and/or peatbogs, identification of tephra layers followed by their geochemical and petrological analysis, sample dating by radiocarbon or Ar/Ar methods, and correlations with ignimbrites from calderas in Sumatra.
>
> The successful candidate will work in a vibrant scientific department with a team of international scientists. Candidates with prior experience in tephrostratigraphy and petrology are desired. Commencement date is in January 2018, the position is for 2 years, and salary will be commensurate with experience.
>
> Duties and Responsibilities
>
> · Field work: The candidate will work effectively with local collaborators and assist with site selection, field work planning and execution for the collection of sediment cores.
> · The candidate will log the collected sediment cores, and identify and sample tephra layers preserved within them.
> · Correlations of tephra with specific eruptions: The candidate will texturally and geochemically characterize the sampled volcanic ash. He or she will use statistical methods to correlate tephra layers between cores and with known eruptions.
> · The candidate will be expected to publish the scientific outcomes of this research in high quality, peer-reviewed, international scientific journals.
> · He or she will be involved with PhD student mentoring.
> · He or she will participate in the various volcanology-related education and outreach activities of the EOS.
> Requirements:
> · PhD degree in volcanology or equivalent.
> · Prior experience in tephrostratigraphy and petrology.
> · Experience in using geochemical laboratory facilities (e.g. XRF core scanner, scanning electron microscope, electron microprobe, and laser-ablation ICP-MS).
> · Experience in conducting fieldwork for research.
> · Self-driven, highly motivated, with interest to work with other researchers and scientists (team player) to produce high-quality research.
> Interested applicants are invited to submit a full CV, including academic qualifications, research records / work samples and names and contact details of two referees, to ase_humanresources at ntu.edu.sg <mailto:ase_humanresources at ntu.edu.sg>. Applications will be reviewed by Oct 31st, 2017. The position will close when a suitable candidate has been identified.
