Dear all,
the Friday seminar series continues this Friday (31 March) at 12:30 in the seminar room on the 3rd floor with a presentation given by:
Thor Thordarson "Holocene tephra stratigraphy in the western half of Iceland"
In the last 12 ka explosive basalt to rhyolite eruptions in Iceland have produced numerous widespread tephra fall deposits with typical recurrence intervals on the order of decades. Consequently, Icelandic tephrochronology has a prominent role in paleoclimate studies in the North Atlantic because tephra horizons are excellent age and stratigraphic markers in Holocene sedimentary archives and help with establishing timing of climate modifying events. Comprehensive and accurate chronologies within Iceland are essential because they underpin our understanding of the far-field chronologies and help with tephra detection and discrimination. They are equally important for studies concerning history and nature of explosive volcanism.
Over the last 15 years we have seen momentous improvements in the records of Holocene tephra stratigraphy in Iceland, in which the expansion of the traditional soil-based tephra studies to include glacial, lacustrine and marine sediment archives has played a pivotal role. The tephra stratigraphy used for correlation of these sedimentary archives is underpinned by robust geochemical characterization of each tephra layer. A comprehensive tephra source identification system has been established via comprehensive geochemical reference tephra data base, which allows for methodical identification of the source volcanic system and often the source eruption. In this lecture, I review studies concerning the tephra identification and stratigraphy in lacustrine sediments within lakes in south, central, west and northwest Iceland.
