Hi all.

On Friday 7 July at 10:00, in the lecture room on the 3rd floor of Askja,
Mary K. Butwin will give the mid-term lecture for her PhD studies.

The title of the presentation is
"Suspension of Dust and Ash in Iceland"

Short abstract:

Roughly a fifth of Iceland’s surface is loose material that originated from
volcanic and glacial activity. With the frequent windy conditions in Iceland
this loose material can be easily suspended into the atmosphere. Suspension
of particulate matter (PM) decreases air quality and can pose a health risk
to those with frequent exposure. The frequency of exposure is highly
dependent on time since the last ash rich eruption, as well as weather
conditions. The largest health risk to individuals is with PM with a
diameter of 10mm and less and with elongated grains, as they have a greater
impact on the respiratory system. The elongation of grains is common with
volcanic ash, but also of surface material in Iceland. Size distribution of
volcanic ash has been done with the majority of volcanic eruptions in
Iceland; however, the size distribution of the surface has not. This
surface material is what is frequently suspended in dust events that
throughout the country.

Lava from Holuhraun/Bárðarbunga eruption in 2014-2015 covered a quarter of
Iceland’s deserts greatly decreasing the availability of loose material.
With numerical modeling it may be possible to determine the impact the new
lava field has on the frequency of PM suspension. In theory it should
decrease the amount and frequency of suspended PM. The heat from the lava
creates a strong thermal gradient and may affect the wind field, which may
change the suspension of PM.

Sincerely,
Throstur.
