Dear all,
the Friday seminar series continues next Friday (5 May) at 12:30 in the seminar room on the 3rd floor with a presentation given by:
John Haines: "The Darfield Mw 7.1 earthquake of 4 September 2010 and the Christchurch Mw 6.3 aftershock of 22 February 2011”
The M7.1 Darfield main shock ruptured the Greendale fault in 2010, rupturing a previously unknown fault, now termed the Greendale fault. The Christchurch main shock also ruptured an unknown active fault. Both events caused significant damage and loss of lives. A large number of scientist has been studying these events since, and this talk summarises the main findings.
These include:
• Source models: from seismology and geodesy
• Hydrology: Canterbury Plains and elsewhere
• Kaiapoi: Liquifaction in Darfield EQ
• Port Hills: Rock fall and such in Christchurch EQ
• General damage: Both earthquakes and where to rebuild
• Seismic waves: Site effect recording
• Extreme motions
