Dear all,

It is our great pleasure to introduce the 'Provocative Idea Lab' and invite
everybody to join us this Friday (25th of September). Leif and I are
organizing this lab and here is our introduction text:

The "Provocative Idea Lab"

Every once in a while instead of the usual Friday seminar we will have a
meeting of the minds. Where presentors will provide a short 10-15 minute
introduction to a provocative ‘new’ idea in the Earth Sciences. Following
the presentation a respondant, will begin the discussion between the
presentors and the audience. The respondant’s goal is to create fruitful,
expanding interactions that stimulate and inspire us.

The environment will be safe. Taking intellectual risks will be encouraged.
And sharing ‘crazy’ ideas will be highly appreciated. Everyone is welcome:
Masters students, PhD students, Postdocs, professors, and emeriti. The goal
is to have a vibrant discussion that crosses disciplines and academic
hierarchies. Effort should be made to explain concepts and ideas at a level
accessible to all the scientists in the lab. We will be encouraged to back
up ideas with facts so others can reply in turn.

A courteous tone must be held throughout these meetings. Other people’s
ideas must be respected especially across disciplines. This requires that
we reflect on what counts as viable proof in each discipline and honor the
differences between them. At no time will strength of personality overrule
the validity of an argument.

+ to encourage a healthy heart and mind home-made snacks will be offered

Topic this week:

*Do volcanoes control glacial cycles?*

Presented by: Leif Anderson
Respondant: Alex Jarosch

When: 12:05 Friday, September 25

Where: 3rd floor conference room

Hope to see you all there.

Alex and Leif
