Hey Everyone!

Mona Dragosics, Hrönn Egilsdóttir, and I spoke with Þór this morning about
the representation of students in the various Faculty and Science Institute
meetings as there had been some confusion. In the university's bylaws,
students have the right to vote and participate in Faculty meetings (see
end of email for exact wording). These meetings are different from the
board meetings, which are small joint meetings between the Institute and
Faculty that typically a member of Folda attends. The Faculty meetings
occur every 1-2 months throughout the year, who currently has ~27 members
with voting rights and no one from the Science Institute.

We determined that the students of Earth Sciences are allowed 5
representatives, this includes both undergraduate and graduate. Two of
these spots will be allocated for the undergraduate students, meaning we
fill the remaining three. Ideally it is at least one Masters and one PhD.
As many of us might be in class, in the field or out of the country during
any one of these Faculty meetings, we are also allowed substitutes.

It is important for us to be represented at these meetings as various
points regarding teaching, research, administration, and so on are put on
the agenda, discussed and voted on. This is definitely our chance to make
sure any issues we come across are heard and discussed.

Therefore I am looking for at least 4 Masters students and 4 PhD students
that would be interested in representing and voting for the graduate
students during these Faculty meetings. If it is a question of commitment,
remember that you do not have to attend every single Faculty meetings as we
by having 8+ students, at least 3 should be available.

Please let me know if you are interested! There is a meeting next
Wednesday, 9 December at 15:00 and we will need to submit a list of
potential representatives by Monday, 7 December. Also, if there are any
issues in general please feel free to talk to myself or Mona so we can put
it on the agenda for any Board and/or Faculty meetings.

Thanks again to those who did attend last week's Faculty meeting, greatly
appreciated considering the late notice.

Deirdre

Extract from article 17

Loose translation into English by ÞÞ:

"In addition, the Faculty student cohort (undergraduate and graduate
students) has the right to three representatives in Faculties, where the
number of those others that have rights to participate and vote is 12 or
fewer. When the number exceeds 12, then the student cohort get one
representative for every 6 additional faculty members. Rules for the
selection of the student representatives are decided by the Faculty
Meeting. These rules should guarantee, as much is possible, that both the
undergraduate and graduate students have their representatives in Faculty
Meetings. The Faculty, if it so chooses, can forward the authority to
decide on the rules regarding the student representative selection process
to the student organizations within the Faculty.
