Hello all,

Tomorrow (Thursday) is Folda lunch day!

Bring your lunch up to the 3rd floor seminar room at 12 noon, for a talk from Will Moreland about his Masters research: The Geochemistry and Petrogenesis of the Rocks of Arthur's Seat, Edinburgh, Scotland.

Abstract: The Dinantian volcanic rocks of Arthur’s Seat have been the study of many petrological studies for the best part of the last century but have had very little geochemical work carried out on them. This study consisted of a complete and systematic geochemical survey of the rocks in Holyrood Park and several important exposures outside of it. The data support many previous hypotheses as to the source and sequence of the lavas and intrusions. There is however a number of premises which the data refute such as Lava 1 having been sourced at the Castle Rock Vent and that the St. Leonard’s Sill was associated with other shallow intrusions found in the park. An important conclusion of the study is that at least two periods of magma reservoir replenishment occurred, resetting the incompatible element concentrations. The youngest units of the Arthur’s Seat Volcanic Formation appear to have been part of a separate event, characterised by high Nb and Zr.

See you then!
