POSITION AS A 3 YEAR Ph.D. FELLOWSHIP IN GLACIER REMOTE SENSING

Natural Sciences, University of Oslo.

Job description

We invite applications for a challenging PhD research fellowship for
glacier monitoring at regional and global scales using advanced
satellite remote sensing and GIS techniques. A main focus of the work will
be on optical techniques such as DEM generation from stereo data and
multi-spectral classification. The work will, however, also
include SAR and altimeter technologies. Special attention will be to
multi-temporal aspects. The candidate will be part of a lively
research environment in cold regions

sciences. The position includes close collaboration with a number of other
world-leading research groups in glacier remote sensing and with involved
space agencies.

The position is embedded in the ESA GlobGlacier project, and in the EU
Brahmatwinn project.

Required qualifications

The successful candidate has a strong background in optical spaceborne
remote sensing (including geometric and spectral image processing),
glaciology and

applied geoinformatics/GIS. Additional background in spaceborne SAR and
altimetry is an asset. The candidate will closely cooperate with
international

project partners in Switzerland, Austria, UK, Germany, and the
Himalayas as well as international organizations and programs such as
WGMS, GLIMS or NSIDC.

Research fellowship applicants must hold a Master degree (or an
equivalent level of education) relevant for a PhD-study in the above
mentioned specialties. Applicants who will finish their master study
within December 2007 are entitled to apply given that a date is set for
their final exam.

The candidate should have good knowledge of English (oral and
written), the ability to work in a team as well as independently, and be
well structured and organized.

Application letter including a statement of interest (related to
research tasks above) and indicating a preferred starting date;

Curriculum vitae including one set of certified copies of certificates;

A list of published and unpublished works;

Three copies of scientific works (printed or non-printed) that the
applicant wishes to be considered by the evaluation committee;

Names and contact information of two references.

The purpose of the research fellowship is research training leading to the
successful completion of a doctoral (Ph.D.) degree. The position requires
admission to the research training programme at the Faculty of Mathematics
and Natural Sciences, University of Oslo. Application must be submitted
within one month and accepted within three months after entry of position.
